Feeling disconnected? Experiencing mental or emotional tension? Suffering with pain, anxiety, or a sense of overwhelm?

If so, you’re not alone. Today’s fast-paced world is leaving a lot of stressed-out, anxious people in its wake. You may be feeling the effects of living in today’s stressful society, but did you know that there’s a link between sensations in your body and issues in your life? That means that what’s happening in your life is being reflected by what’s going on in your body -- and vice versa.

If you’re looking for some relief, why not jump off the treadmill of life and slow down? Take your life back by scheduling a Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy session and experience the following benefits:

  • Enhanced circulation
  • Increased respiration and body functioning
  • Greater mental clarity
  • Enhanced emotional stability
  • Increased sense of well-being
  • and so much more!

What is Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy?

A Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy session combines dialogue and supported yoga poses to facilitate greater self-awareness, and ultimately heal your body, mind, and spirit.

Going Beyond the Physical

Rather than focusing solely on the physical, Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy approaches the client with the belief that physical conditions/issues as well as mental, emotional, and spiritual states are linked rather than separate. Unlike other therapists, a Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy practitioner doesn’t make a diagnosis and then offer a treatment. Instead, the practitioner helps you become aware of what’s happening in your body and in your life and take you through a process that helps you determine what you might want to change and how you can do it.

Working From the Inside Out

Rather than tell you how to move your body or what you need to do in order to “fix” yourself, a Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy session empowers you to be your own healer. Throughout the session, you’re encouraged to turn your awareness inward and stay with the experience. Rather than think about your experience, you’re given the time and the space to feel the messages your body is sending you, recognize insights, release attachments, and recognize long-held beliefs that may no longer beneficial.

How it’s Different from Yoga as You Know it

In a yoga class or a more physically therapeutic yoga therapy session, the focus is on alignment, body patterns, and how a pose looks. Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy is based on an approach to yoga that focuses on working from the inside out and paying less attention to "form" and more attention to "essence." It’s not about how good you look or how well you can perform an asana. Its more about what happens to you in all aspects of your being while you are engaging the asana and being able to notice and distinguish the subtleties in body, mind and spirit - then using this information as awareness on which to evaluate and, possibly, change your life.

What Happens During a Session?

You’ll be guided through a series of classic yoga postures that are restorative in nature. Rather than actively moving into a pose, you’ll be gently moved by the Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy practitioner. You’ll enter each assisted posture slowly, with a focus on what’s happening in your body. Throughout the session, you’ll be asked questions regarding your thoughts and feelings so that you can tap into your emotions.

The focus of the session is to understand your inner world by working on your outer world (your body). You’ll be encouraged to listen to what your body is telling you and think about how your emotions are being manifested through your body. This practice is very powerful, as it helps you tap into your innermost feelings. It also provides you with a safe place to air your deepest thoughts and feelings.

“…the body, the voluntary musculature, is controlled by and reveals mental life, and how touch and bodily interventions can speak directly to the unconscious. When we value our bodies and listen to them more closely, we become more connected to ourselves and the world around us.”
--Greg Johanson and Ron Kurtz, Grace Unfolding

 The Format of a Session

Centering
The session begins with a brief guided meditation that draws your attention inward and heightens awareness of your physical and emotional state.

Postures and Dialogue
You’ll then be guided into a posture that produces a physical and/or emotional sensation and supported throughout your time in the pose. While you’re in the pose simple dialogue is introduced to facilitate awareness and exploration of how feelings register in the body.

Integration
The session concludes with a process that links what happened during the session to your daily life. This process encourages you to tap into your own inner wisdom for guidance and helps you create an action step to jumpstart your transformation.

How it’s Different from Traditional Therapy

Your reasoning mind isn’t used during the process – rather than think about lifelong issues, you’re encouraged to experience what’s happening in the moment. The practitioner doesn’t offer advice or evaluate or judge what you say, but instead creates a safe and supportive environment for you to express your experience and guide you to tap into your inner wisdom.

How it’s Different from Bodywork

Rather than focus on solely the physical, Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy addresses the body, mind, and emotions. The work attunes you to the body-mind connection.

"As we come more fully into the body, into an awareness of what is being felt, we awaken enough to our inner response to conditions to recognize what’s needed. We check back to this finely tuned diagnostic mechanism to see what is called for, how balance can best be maintained."
--Stephen Levine, A Gradual Awakening
